Throughout most of our adult lives, the move to a new home is precipitated by a major life event: a new job, a relocation, or a new baby in a house that’s already bursting at the seams. But once our child-rearing years are behind us and we’re past the days of traversing the country to pursue a career, our reasons for moving become less urgent and more personal.

Nearly half of all baby boomers plan to move at some point before or during their retirement, but without a pressing need to move, it’s often a case of waiting for what feels like the right moment—or the right property. Often the decision to move comes only after a gradual realization process: another weekend spent mowing the lawn instead of enjoying it, another workday spent waiting for the roofers, another season of heating or cooling unused rooms.
For Dave Roberts, the longtime weather anchor for Philadelphia’s Channel 6 Action News, the “Aha!” moment arrived when he and his wife first visited Athertyn at Haverford Reserve. “We weren’t in any particular hurry to move, but the maintenance-free aspect and the ability to easily pick up and travel certainly appealed to us,” Roberts said. “When we came to visit Athertyn, it had just the right feel, and we thought, ‘Why wait?’ This is everything we were looking for, with no sense of compromise.”
Roberts echoes the sentiments expressed by many Main Line boomers in a survey conducted by the Pohlig organization, the builder behind the award-winning Athertyn at Haverford Reserve. Survey respondents listed the desire for maintenance-free living, the ability to “pick up and go,” and a desire to simplify life among their primary reasons for considering a move to a lifestyle community.
“For the first time in our lives, we’re able to move because we want to, not because we have to,” says builder Todd Pohlig, who counts himself among the boomer population. “Our buyers are discovering this amazing new found freedom and having a great time socializing with other residents at the clubhouse – it’s the boomer life, stage II! We’ve all worked hard and made huge contributions in our lives. Now we want to start enjoying our new adventures and have fun while we’re still young!”
Athertyn’s park-side location in Haverford and the builder’s outstanding reputation were other important factors in Roberts’ decision. “We’ve built a wonderful life here, and we wanted to stay in the neighborhood. We were very familiar with the Pohlig organization and the quality of the homes they build, so we were very comforted to know that Pohlig was the builder behind Athertyn,” Roberts said.
